YELVERTON TENNIS CLUB NEWSLETTER 2024
Henrietta is currently on holiday, so in her absence I thought I would give you an overview of all the good work she is doing as Chair. She has initiated new sub-committees for Social events, Membership, Maintenance & Juniors. This is to allow a more focused approach and they report back to the rest of the Committee at meetings. The Membership sub-committee has already come up with some excellent new thoughts regarding membership categories and potential ideas to increase membership numbers. On the Maintenance front, CourtCare deep cleaned all three courts during the first week of November, the trees on the court boundary have been trimmed and the courts are to be repainted before the start of the league season. Notes from the Social committee are shown below. She wants to ensure inclusivity in the opportunity to express an interest in playing league tennis and asked the Captains to Email the whole membership to gauge willingness to participate. Other positive initiatives to promote the Club further are open days, updating of our website and an improved social media presence. THANK-YOU…. To Lesley Smith who stood down as Safeguarding Officer at the AGM. Lesley is the first person to take up this role for YTC and has put processes in place to steer the Club forward down this increasingly important path. When the Club had a review by the LTA the safeguarding inspector praised Lesley & the Club for their organisation & detailed approach. To Rachel Youngs-Pearce who has resigned from the committee having taken up a school governor post. The Club is very pleased that she will continue her role on the junior sub-committee. TEAM TENNIS Ladies Captain, Di Harrison-Webber, reports that the ladies have been having team training with Jane. It has been very well attended despite the weather not being very kind. They have learnt some very useful doubles tactics, that will hopefully help them all and can be put into practise when the summer league starts. She is very grateful to all the ladies for their enthusiasm and commitment and they are all looking forward to a very positive summer season. Charles Hattersley continues as Men’s Captain with two teams, although he is hoping to strengthen the squad. It wasn’t felt that YTC could sustain a third Men’s team in 2024 although this is always under consideration. MEMBERSHIP A reminder that membership runs out on 31st March 2024 – please do renew if you haven’t done so already. COACHING UPDATE I am sure most of you will know that Jane had a bad heel injury which led to her taking January off from coaching in order to rest. She used this time out wisely to prepare for the year ahead and keep her knowledge up to date by learning new developments within coaching at the LTA. More recently she has been hit by a double dose of flu, obviously, Jane's continuing ill health has delayed many of the clubs coaching and promotional activities. She has also been working alongside the Junior sub-committee and the Membership sub-committee to help bring their plans to fruition. It is planned to have an Open Day as soon as is feasible and further coaching for all standards is planned. We look forward to Jane being back to full health and hearing further details. SOCIAL NEWS Mary & Di organised that perennial Christmas treat, the “YTC Almost Christmas Quiz” which raised just over £250 for Club funds. As always, a very enjoyable evening with a good variety of topics. Thanks for Chris for managing the bar. To start off YTC’s 40th anniversary celebrations, Di & Mary asked Julia & Wendy to assist with the arranging of our dinner/dance at Yelverton Golf Club. Following on from the success of last year’s event, it was agreed that we keep to the same format. The draw, organised mainly by Di & Wendy, raised £225.00 which was an amazing amount. All the prizes were donated by local businesses and Club members – thanks to you for your generosity. Wendy collated some YTC photos and memorabilia that covered the whole 40 years which were circulated with much interest. It was especially good to welcome Lyn & Dennis Jones, long-standing ex-members. Den was Treasurer for many years and they were both very involved with the club. They can be seen in some of the photos below, still hitting the dance floor in style! The overall profit for the evening was £502.50 which is very pleasing indeed. We are now looking to book again for 2025 and think the Yelverton Golf Club is a good-sized venue for us & represents good value. If anyone has any input on any other suitable venues in the vicinity, please do let Mary or Di know and we can investigate. Failing that we will proceed to book YGC again. Thanks for supporting our social events – it does help the Club & is enjoyable as well, here’s some evidence!
