YELVERTON TENNIS CLUB 30TH ANNIVERSARY
On June 2nd 1984 a ceremony took place to officially open two tennis courts and a clubhouse (actually then a garden shed) on the War Memorial Field at Yelverton. Historically there had always been a tennis court on the recreation field but the site was passed over to the current bowling club. At the time this change was made there were many courts in the area available for public use but over the years these had disappeared for various reasons. By 1982, following a public meeting, it was decided to take action to redress this situation. After negotiations the War Memorial Committee gladly gave permission for the two proposed new courts. A group of fund-raising tennis enthusiasts formed a development club and managed to raise the necessary funds, this development club then evolved into Yelverton Tennis Club in 1983.
As numbers increased it became clear that a further court & a modern clubhouse were needed. Once more the War Memorial Committee were amenable to the proposals and in 1993 it was agreed to start the fund-raising ball rolling again. Again there were grants, donations, a levy on club members and fund-raising events and on November 5th 1994 the new court and clubhouse with changing rooms, toilet facilities & a kitchen were opened by councillor Peter Brown.
The extra court allowed an increase in the number of teams playing in the Plymouth and District League and to this day the club currently fields three ladies teams, two men’s teams & a junior team. The club also encourages social tennis & friendly matches and is pleased to welcome players of all standards.
Since celebrating its 20th Anniversary further improvements have been made to the facilities by the club, principally adding floodlights to two courts to allow for play when conditions are favourable but the light is sadly lacking. Secondly a ball machine was purchased as an added facility to members and as a training aid for our coach, Roger Froud.
Roger is a LTA Senior Performance Coach and a PTR Professional and he is an invaluable asset to the club. He runs junior coaching sessions on Saturday mornings for beginners, intermediate and advanced players and also coaching for adults on Sundays or privately by arrangement.
There is also a strong social side to the club and various events take place through the year, from quizzes, dinners and the ever popular Pimms Tournament to an upcoming celebration on 7th June marking 30 successful years. This is to be held at the War Memorial Hall in Yelverton and everybody is very welcome. Further details and tickets are available from Wendy Sharland on 01822 853613.
We look forward to the future with optimism. The club is currently affiliated to the LTA and is working towards the Club Mark accreditation which is a cross sport scheme for community sport clubs. We are also raising funds for the upgrading of our courts whilst being mindful of our aim to keep membership costs at a reasonable level.
